About 1 in 5 Nebraskans consider themselves atheist, agnostic, humanist or “spiritual,” but don’t adhere to organized religion. What implications does this have for the state?
(Includes a separate audio track from a recent meeting of Lincoln “Nones,” ages ranging from 18 to 83.)
“Nebraska’s changing religious landscape: The rise of the “Nones,” and the political implications”
Part I:
Religion has been an integral part of the cultural framework of the United States since the beginning. Many of the first European migrants to America came seeking religious freedom. But a recent nationwide survey shows religious diversity in America is increasing, and a growing number of Americans simply aren’t religious at all.

Jessica Errett from Edge of Arbor | X-Rated Podcast | Hear Nebraska »
“Something that’s really popular in Omaha is just being totally different … and I feel like I kind of stick to classic songwriting rules. But then we use lots of different instruments to make the songs our own.”
Jessica Errett, singer, guitarist and songwriter for Edge of Arbor, made the trek down from Omaha last Thursday to play some new songs, some really old songs (like the third song she ever wrote) and some songs from the band’s debut EP, “Neon-Lit Lights,” which was released in March.
She described Edge of Arbor’s music as colorful, organic, twiggy, evolving, lambic, active, percussive and friendly.
Check out the podcast below, recorded Thursday, May 5 at the KZUM studios in the Terminal Building at 10th and O streets in Lincoln …
The fight against fraud: How to protect seniors (and yourself) from being victims »
I realize very few tumblrers are seniors — and likely none of my followers — but my grandfather fell victim to a scam like the ones I researched for this piece, and I think it behooves all of us to know the warning signs so that we can protect the vulnerable in our population.

What are your favorite summer songs by women? Or lady music that makes you think of summer?
This week’s radio show is going to be a celebration of the spotty-but-here warm weather that’s descended upon Lincoln. ;) This means I’ll probably be playing a lot of pop music.
See above!
Just confirmed an in-studio with Omaha band Edge of Arbor …
… for April 28th. You can get a taste of their music tomorrow night at The Zoo Bar, 136 N. 14th St. in Lincoln, when they play with Brothers Tandem and Mike Goode.
No easy answers to high rates of obesity among Nebraska's American Indians »
“For about two weeks, I was pretty devastated, of course,” he said. “But then you know, diabetes is kind of like a slap in the face. You’re too young to remember the screen doors, back before we had air conditioning, but the screen door had a big spring on it, and once in a while, if you were a kid, and you forgot about it, it’d come and hit you right in the face.”
Diabetes and obesity have reached epidemic proportions among American Indians, particularly in Nebraska, where more than one in four American Indian adults reported being diagnosed with diabetes, according to a 2009 report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
In Nebraska, the rate of obesity for tribes is double that of Hispanics and African-Americans and almost four times as high as non-Hispanic Caucasians.
Diabetes can shorten a person’s lifespan by fifteen years. On average, annual medical costs for diabetic people are five times that of non-diabetic individuals, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services …
Saving money socially through group coupons »
“As the economy struggles to recover, people have been forced to find new ways to make their paychecks stretch. One money-saving tool in particular has exploded in the U.S. marketplace, to the tune of more than 50 million users. For the last few years, American pocketbooks have started filling up not with cash, but with coupons. Group coupons, to be exact.”
Even my favorite pool-table-pinball-machine-free-popcorn dive bar did a Groupon. Seriously. Shit is crazy.
